Feast Day: August 27
Birth: July 14, 1917
Death: August 1, 27
Blessed Petro Pavlo Oros, also known as Péter Orosz or Petr Oros, was born on 14 July 1917 in Biri, Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg, Hungary. He was the son of a Greek Catholic priest and grew up in a devout Catholic family. In 1919, when he was just two years old, his family relocated to Transcarpathia.
Petro's strong faith and calling to serve God led him to join the diocesan seminary in Užgorod to pursue his studies. After completing his education, he was ordained a priest of the eparchy of Mukachevo in the Ruthenian Rite on 26 June 1942. Following his ordination, he was appointed as a parish priest in Bol’šie Komjaty, where he dedicated himself to the spiritual well-being of his parishioners.
Recognizing his exemplary dedication and leadership, Petro was consecrated as the auxiliary bishop of Mukachevo on 19 December 1944. As a bishop, he carried out his pastoral duties with great zeal and was a source of inspiration and guidance for the faithful. However, his tenure as bishop coincided with a turbulent period in the region's history.
In 1948, the local government attempted to pressure Bishop Petro to switch allegiance to the Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate, which was under the influence of the Soviet Union. However, Petro remained steadfast in his Catholic faith and refused to comply with their demands. This unwavering commitment to his beliefs would ultimately seal his fate.
Tragically, during the night of 27 August 1953, Blessed Petro Pavlo Oros was shot and killed by a supporter of the Soviet regime. The assailant, a militiaman, silenced the bishop's voice, hoping to suppress his message of faith and freedom. After his murder, his body was hastily buried in a militia garage, and its location remained unknown for thirty years.
However, in a remarkable turn of events, the testimony of one of the militiamen eventually led to the discovery of Bishop Petro's burial site. After decades of secrecy, his remains were finally recovered, honoring his memory and allowing for proper veneration.
Recognizing the exceptional faith and sacrifice of Blessed Petro Pavlo Oros, Pope Francis declared his martyrdom on 5 August 2022, acknowledging his unwavering commitment to the Catholic Church in the face of persecution. Although he has yet to be beatified, his faithful witness and dedication to Christ serve as an inspiration to all believers.
On the feast day of 27 August, the Catholic Church commemorates the life and martyrdom of Blessed Petro Pavlo Oros, honoring his memory and seeking his intercession for strength and courage in the face of adversity.
