Biography

Blessed Pierina Morosini, born on 7 January 1931 in Fiobbio di Albino, Italy, is celebrated as a martyr to chastity. She was the fourth of eight children born into a poor family in the diocese of Bergamo. From a young age, Pierina showed deep piousness and devotion to God. In fact, she made a private vow of chastity, dedicating herself completely to the service of the Lord.

At the age of 15, Pierina began working in a fabric factory to help support her family. Despite her humble circumstances, she aspired to a religious life and had considered entering a convent. However, due to the needs of her family, she remained at home to assist her mother in caring for her younger siblings.

In addition to her tireless work as a seamstress, Pierina also served as a catechist, actively involved in imparting the teachings of the Catholic faith to others. Her dedication to her family and her spiritual vocation shone through her daily actions.

Life took a tragic turn for Pierina one fateful day when she was returning home from work. She was viciously attacked by a would-be rapist, who sought to violate her vow of chastity. Rather than giving in to this grave offense against her purity, Pierina resisted with unwavering strength and courage. Tragically, she ultimately succumbed to the injuries sustained during the assault and died as a martyr to her commitment to chastity.

The heroic witness of Blessed Pierina Morosini did not go unnoticed. On 3 July 1987, Pope John Paul II formally recognized her martyrdom with a decree of veneration. Pierina was then beatified by the same pope on 4 October 1987, in a solemn ceremony held in Rome, Italy.
