Biography

Blessed Pietro Da Imola, also known as Peter of Imola, Peter Pattarini or Pietro Pattarini de Imola, was born in the mid-13th century in Italy. He was the son of Giacomo di Antonio, a member of the Ghibelline political faction, and was related to the Italian nobility.

Pietro started his career as a lawyer and by 1289, he was already known to have served as a civil magistrate. In 1299, he played a crucial role as a leader in the peace negotiations between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines, demonstrating his diplomatic skills and commitment to resolving conflicts.

However, due to political reasons, Pietro was exiled from the Romagna region of northern Italy to Florence in 1311. It was during this time that he began working with the sick in charity hospitals, showing his compassion and dedication to helping those in need.

Pietro's life took a significant turn when he became a knight in the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, also known as the Order of Malta. This marked a shift in his focus towards religious and charitable pursuits. He devoted himself to the ministry, using his position to aid the sick and less fortunate.

Recognizing his dedication and leadership abilities, Pietro was elected as the Grand Prior of the Order in Rome, Italy. This appointment allowed him to have a broader impact on the Order's work, expanding their support and care for the sick.

In addition to his role as Grand Prior, Pietro served as the Director of the Commandery of San Giacomo in Campo Corbellini, Florence. This particular commandery was entirely devoted to the care of the sick, reflecting Pietro's unwavering commitment to his ministry.

Blessed Pietro Da Imola passed away on 5th October 1320 in Campo Corbellini, Florence, Tuscany, Italy, from natural causes. He was entombed in the church of San Giacomo in Campo Corbellini, where many witnessed a miraculous event. During a church renovation, a ladder tipped over and was about to cause significant damage. However, numerous witnesses claimed to have seen the hand of Blessed Pietro reach out from his tomb, catching the ladder and preventing any harm. This event was seen as a testament to his continued presence and intercession for the people.

The relics of Blessed Pietro Da Imola are enshrined under the high altar of the church of San Giacomo in Campo Corbellini. Unfortunately, a significant flood in 1557 destroyed most of the relics and records associated with him. However, some relics are also enshrined in the cathedral in Imola, Italy, where he was originally from.

While not officially venerated or beatified at this time, the life and works of Blessed Pietro Da Imola continue to inspire many with his selflessness, dedication to serving the sick, and the miraculous events attributed to his intercession. His story serves as a reminder of the power of compassion and the pursuit of the common good.
