Biography

Blessed Plácido García Gilabert, born as Miguel García Gilabert on 1 January 1895 in Benitachell, in the diocese of Valencia, Alicante, Spain, was raised in a devout family and was known for his exceptional intellectual abilities. From a young age, he displayed a keen interest in his studies, which led him to join the Franciscan minor seminary in Benisa, Spain, at the age of 12.

Recognizing his vocation to religious life, Miguel entered the Novitiate of the Franciscan Friars Minor on 3 October 1910, taking the name Plácido. He made his solemn profession on 10 November 1914, sealing his commitment to the Franciscan way of life. After his profession, Plácido continued his theological studies in Valencia, Spain, and was ordained a priest on 21 September 1918.

Driven by a deep thirst for knowledge, Plácido pursued further theological studies at the prestigious Faculty of Law of the Antonianum in Rome, Italy. This academic pursuit equipped him with a profound understanding of theology, which he would later use to educate and guide others in his role as a teacher.

Upon his return to Spain, Father Plácido taught theology at the Franciscan school in Onteniente, where he dedicated himself to the education and formation of future priests. His gentle and patient approach, coupled with his deep faith, made him a beloved teacher and mentor to many students.

Recognizing his leadership qualities and dedication to the Franciscan order, Father Plácido was entrusted with positions of greater responsibility. He served as the superior of his house and later became the rector of the college, where he oversaw the spiritual and educational formation of the friars and students in his care.

Tragically, the faithful journey of Father Plácido came to an abrupt end during the Spanish Civil War, a time of great upheaval and persecution for the Church. At dawn on 8 September 1936, Father Plácido was martyred in Castellón, Spain, for his unwavering commitment to his faith and his refusal to renounce his religious convictions. His courageous witness to the Gospel earned him the palm of martyrdom and a place among the Martyred Friars Minor of Valencia.

Father Plácido García Gilabert was buried in the cemetery at Benitachell, in the diocese of Valencia, Alicante, Spain. In 1967, his relics were transferred to the parish church in Benitachell, where they are venerated by the faithful.

Recognizing the heroic virtue of Father Plácido, Pope John Paul II declared him venerable on 20 December 1999, acknowledging his martyrdom during the Spanish Civil War. On 11 March 2001, Pope John Paul II, in a solemn ceremony, beatified Father Plácido García Gilabert, honoring him as a model of faith, courage, and fidelity to Christ. His feast day is celebrated on 16 August, and on some calendars, it is also commemorated on 8 September. Additionally, he is venerated on 20 November as one of the Martyred Friars Minor of Valencia.
