Blessed Radegonda

Biography

Blessed Radegonda was a devout Premonstratensian nun who resided in the monastery of San Pablo de Sordillos in the town of Villamayor de Treviño, Burgos, Spain. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, the sisters had to relocate to the nearby monastery of San Miguel de Villamayor de Treviño.

During her religious journey, Radegonda embarked on a pilgrimage to Rome, Italy, and potentially even to the Holy Lands. It was during these travels that she felt a profound calling to live as a recluse, desiring to dedicate her life to prayer and solitude. Thus, she was enclosed in a small cell adjacent to the church of San Miguel, where she would spend the remaining years of her life in deep contemplation.

On January 29, 1156, Radegonda peacefully passed away in San Miguel de Villamayor de Treviño, having lived a life devoted to God's service. She died of natural causes and was laid to rest in the cloister of her monastery. In 1612, her relics were transferred to the church of San Miguel, where they continue to be venerated.

Blessed Radegonda's remarkable and humble life as an anchoress serves as an inspiration to countless individuals seeking a closer relationship with God through prayer and solitude. While not formally recognized as a saint, her exemplary faith and dedication continue to be commemorated on her feast day, January 29, particularly in the town of Villamayor de Treviño, Spain.
