Biography

Blessed Rafaél García Torres, also known as Rafaél Torres, was a layman of the diocese of Almería, Spain, who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He is venerated as a blessed in the Catholic Church and his feast day is celebrated on May 20th.

Rafaél García Torres was born on February 22, 1904, in Almería, Spain. He grew up in a devout Catholic family and from a young age, he demonstrated a strong faith and dedication to his spiritual life. Rafaél was known for his kindness, generosity, and love for his fellow brothers and sisters.

In his early adulthood, Rafaél became actively involved in his local parish and participated in various religious activities. He was deeply committed to his faith and sought to serve God in all aspects of his life. Rafaél was particularly known for his devotion to the Eucharist, spending many hours in prayer and adoration before the Blessed Sacrament.

During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Rafaél remained steadfast in his faith, even as religious persecution intensified. He bravely defended his beliefs and refused to renounce his Catholicism despite the growing dangers. Rafaél openly professed his allegiance to Christ, inspiring those around him with his courage and unwavering commitment to the Gospel.

Tragically, on May 20, 1938, in Turón, Granada, Spain, Rafaél García Torres was martyred for his faith. In the midst of immense suffering and persecution, he remained resolute, refusing to abandon his Christian beliefs. Rafaél chose to embrace martyrdom rather than renounce his Lord.

Recognizing his heroic witness and sacrifice, Pope Francis declared Rafaél García Torres venerable on June 14, 2016, through a decree of martyrdom. Subsequently, he was beatified on March 25, 2017, in a ceremony held in the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos de Aguadulce, Almería, Spain. The beatification was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato, representing the Holy Father.

The life of Blessed Rafaél García Torres continues to inspire countless individuals to remain steadfast in their faith and to stand up for their beliefs, even in the face of persecution.
