Biography
Blessed Redemptorus of the Cross was born Thomas Rodriguez da Cunha in Portugal and was a military officer. In 1615 he became a Discalced Carmelite and took the name Redemptorus of the Cross. With Blessed Denis of the Nativity he travelled as a missionary to the king of Achin. He and his party were ambushed, and he was tortured to death in 1638 on the Malay archipelago. Pope Leo XIII beatified him in 1900.
