Biography

Blessed Richard Herst, also known as Richard Hurst or Richard Hayhurst, was a devoted layman and landowner in the town of Preston, in Lancaster, which was part of the apostolic vicariate of England. He was born in Lancashire, England, and lived during a tumultuous period in English history.

During the reign of King James I, when Catholics were persecuted for their faith, Blessed Richard found himself targeted by the authorities. Three Protestant subjects were sent to apprehend him while he was working in his fields. However, his quick-thinking farm workers urged him to flee, and one of the men gave chase. In an unfortunate turn of events, the pursuer tripped, fell, and suffered a broken leg, ultimately leading to his death several days later. Tragically, Richard was wrongfully accused of murder and faced a grave ordeal.

Even in the face of a potential escape, Blessed Richard resolutely refused to renounce his Catholic faith and oath of allegiance to the pope. He rejected the offer of freedom, which was contingent upon his pledging loyalty to the king as the head of the Church of England and converting to Protestantism. His steadfast devotion to his beliefs and fidelity to the Catholic Church ultimately led to his martyrdom.

Blessed Richard Herst was unjustly convicted and sentenced to death by hanging on August 29, 1628, in Lancaster, Lancashire. His unwavering faith and courage, even in the face of persecution and death, have made him a revered figure among Catholics. He is venerated as a martyr and was officially recognized as such on December 8, 1929, by a decree of martyrdom issued by Pope Pius XI. Pope Pius XI also beatified Richard on December 15, 1929, as a testament to his heroic virtue and sacrifice for the Catholic faith.

Although no specific representations of Blessed Richard Herst are mentioned in the available details, his steadfastness and bravery in the face of persecution serve as a source of inspiration for all believers. His feast day is celebrated on August 29th, commemorating the day of his martyrdom. Throughout his life, Blessed Richard Herst exemplified the virtues of unwavering faith and unyielding commitment to the teachings of the Catholic Church, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations to admire and emulate.
