Biography
Blessed Ruperto García Arce, also known as Brother Florencio Miguel, was a member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools (De La Salle Brothers) and a martyr of the Spanish Civil War. He was born on July 10, 1908, in Carcedo, Burgos, Spain.
As a member of the De La Salle Brothers, Brother Florencio Miguel dedicated his life to the education and spiritual formation of young people. He took his religious vows and became an esteemed educator known for his compassion, dedication, and strong faith.
During the turbulent years of the Spanish Civil War, Brother Florencio Miguel found himself caught in the violent persecution of Catholics and religious orders. Despite the risks, he remained steadfast in his commitment to his faith and to the service of others.
On October 13, 1936, in the city of Barcelona, Spain, Brother Florencio Miguel was martyred for his unwavering dedication to his religious vocation. He faced persecution and violence with courage and humility, giving his life as a testament to his Christian values.
Recognizing his martyrdom and the heroic witness of his life, Pope John Paul II declared Blessed Ruperto García Arce venerable on June 22, 2004, with the decree of martyrdom. Later, on October 28, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI elevated him to the status of Blessed during his beatification ceremony.
