Biography

Blessed Santiago Aparicio López, a devout Dominican friar, was born on 24 September 1913 in the town of Revilla de Collazos, located in Palencia, Spain. From an early age, he demonstrated a strong commitment to his faith and a calling to serve God. He embraced the Dominican Order, dedicating his life to prayer, contemplation, and the pursuit of truth.

During the tumultuous era of the Spanish Civil War, which erupted in 1936, Blessed Santiago found himself caught in the crossfire of political and religious tensions that plagued Spain. Despite the dangers and uncertainties of the time, he remained steadfast in his beliefs, unwavering in his commitment to the Catholic Church.

On 8 August 1936, while stationed in the city of Manzanares, Ciudad Real, Blessed Santiago's dedication to his faith led to his martyrdom. He became a victim of the violence and persecution directed towards Catholic clergy during this period of religious upheaval. His courageous stand for his religious principles cost him his life, as he was martyred for his unwavering devotion to Christ and the Church.

Recognizing the exemplary life and death of Blessed Santiago Aparicio López, Pope Francis declared him venerable on 11 December 2019, acknowledging his martyrdom. Further, on 18 June 2022, at the Cathedral of Santa María de la Sede in Sevilla, Spain, a special beatification ceremony took place led by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, where Pope Francis officially raised Santiago Aparicio López to the rank of blessed.

Blessed Santiago's beatification serves as a testament to his extraordinary witness of faith amidst adversity and persecution. His courage and fortitude in the face of religious intolerance have made him a role model for Catholics worldwide. He stands as a reminder of the sacrifices made by countless individuals during the Spanish Civil War for the cause of religious freedom and the defense of the Church.
