Biography

Blessed Santiago Arriaga Arrien, also known as Father Santiago of Jesus, was a Trinitarian priest who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 22 November 1903 in Líbano de Arrieta, Vizcaya, Spain. Santiago dedicated his life to serving God and others through his religious vocation.

Throughout his priestly ministry, Father Santiago demonstrated a deep devotion to the Holy Trinity, which was reflected in his life of prayer, dedication, and selflessness. He embraced the Trinitarian charism of promoting the redemptive work of Jesus Christ, particularly through the care and assistance of prisoners.

During the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, Father Santiago fearlessly continued his mission to bring hope and spiritual solace to those affected by the conflict. Despite the dangerous circumstances and the persecution faced by Catholic priests, he never wavered in his commitment to spreading the Gospel and ministering to those in need.

Tragically, on 24 September 1936, Father Santiago was martyred in Cuenca, Spain. He was arrested, imprisoned, and ultimately executed for his unwavering faith and dedication to his ministry. Father Santiago's commitment to love, justice, and peace resonated with many, and his reputation for holiness grew over time. Recognizing his exemplary life and the sacrifice he made for his faith, Pope Benedict XVI venerated Father Santiago on 26 June 2006 through a decree of martyrdom. On 28 October 2007, the same pontiff beatified Father Santiago, acknowledging his sanctity and inviting the faithful to seek his intercession.

Today, Blessed Santiago Arriaga Arrien stands as a model of faith and devotion, inspiring Catholics around the world to live out their faith courageously and sacrificially.
