Blessed Saturnina Rodríguez De Zavalía, also known as Catalina of Mary, Caterina di Maria, Josefa Saturnina Rodríguez, Mother Catalina de María Rodríguez, and simply as Saturnina Rodriguez, was born on 27 November 1823 in Córdoba, Argentina. From an early age, she felt a calling to religious life, but she married widower Manuel Antonio de Zavalia on 13 August 1852, becoming step-mother to his son and daughter. Over their twelve-year marriage, they tragically lost their only daughter to a miscarriage.
After being widowed on 30 March 1865, Saturnina began to yield to her persistent yearning for religious life. She heeded the call and founded the Esclavas del Corazon de Jesus (Slaves of the Heart of Jesus, Argentina; Handmaids of the Heart of Jesus) on 29 September 1872. This religious congregation, under her guidance as Sister Catalina of Mary, spread throughout Argentina, engaging in various charitable works and promoting devotion to the Heart of Jesus.
Saturnina's spiritual life was deeply influenced by the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, which played a pivotal role in her formation. These spiritual exercises molded her dedication to God and fueled her desire to serve those in need.
Later in life, Blessed Saturnina Rodríguez De Zavalía actively supported the works of Saint José Gabriel del Rosario Brochero, a fellow Saint of the Catholic Church. Her assistance complemented her own religious congregation's mission, and together they contributed to the spiritual growth and betterment of the people in Argentina.
Blessed Saturnina Rodríguez De Zavalía passed away around 8:00 a.m. on 5 April 1896, in Córdoba, Argentina, due to natural causes. Her holy and virtuous life have been recognized and celebrated by the Catholic Church. Pope John Paul II declared her venerable on 18 December 1997, acknowledging her heroic virtues. Later, on 25 November 2017, Pope Francis beatified her, bestowing her with the title of "Blessed." The beatification ceremony was held in Córdoba, Argentina, and was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato.
One of the miracles attributed to her intercession, leading to her beatification, involved the healing of a woman suffering from severe heart disease in the Tucuman province of Argentina in 1998. This miraculous healing affirmed the sanctity and heavenly intercession of Blessed Saturnina Rodríguez De Zavalía.
Blessed Saturnina Rodríguez De Zavalía's life serves as an inspiration for her dedication to religious life, her tireless service to others, and her unwavering faith in God. Her legacy continues to touch the lives of many, as her religious congregation, the Esclavas del Corazon de Jesus, carries forward her charism and works in Argentina and beyond.
