Biography

Blessed SebastiÖ Balcells Tonijuan, also known as Blessed SebastiÖ Balcells or Bl. SebastiÖ Balcells Tonijuan, was a Claretian brother who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He is venerated as a Catholic saint and is celebrated on his feast day, which falls on August 15th.

SebastiÖ Balcells Tonijuan was born on December 3, 1885, in Fuliola, a town located in the province of Lleida, Spain. He grew up in a devout Catholic family and exhibited a strong sense of faith from an early age. Recognizing his spiritual calling, SebastiÖ joined the Congregation of Missionaries, Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, commonly known as the Claretians. He dedicated himself to a life of service and committed to following the teachings of Jesus Christ.

In the midst of a tumultuous period in Spain's history, Brother SebastiÖ faced great challenges. The Spanish Civil War, an armed conflict that occurred from 1936 to 1939, was marked by intense political and ideological divisions within the country. As a result of this strife, numerous religious individuals, including SebastiÖ, faced persecution for their faith.

On August 15, 1936, in the rugged terrain of Serra d'Almenara, Agramunt, Lleida, Spain, Brother SebastiÖ Balcells Tonijuan was martyred for his Catholic beliefs. He remained steadfast in his commitment to Christ, even in the face of great danger and opposition. His unwavering faith and courage in the face of persecution exemplify the virtues of a true saint.

Recognizing his martyrdom and exemplary life, the Vatican declared Brother SebastiÖ Balcells Tonijuan venerable on June 28, 2012, following a decree issued by Pope Benedict XVI. On October 13, 2013, Pope Francis beatified him, signifying his entrance into the ranks of the blessed. The beatification ceremony was conducted in Tarragona, Spain, honoring his profound sacrifice and sanctity.
