Biography

Blessed Sidney Hodgson was a devout English layman who converted to Catholicism during a period when Catholicism was outlawed in England. He is celebrated for his martyrdom, having been executed for his active support of priests during this challenging era of English history.

Born in England, Sidney Hodgson lived during a time of religious strife and persecution. Despite the political and social risks involved, he chose to embrace the Catholic faith, which had been marginalized and suppressed by the state. Inspired by his newfound beliefs, Hodgson decided to assist Catholic priests who were secretly ministering to Catholics in England.

Hodgson’s devotion to his faith manifested in various forms of support for priests. He provided them shelter, food, and other forms of assistance, enabling them to carry out their religious duties in secret. His bravery in defying the anti-Catholic laws highlights his unwavering commitment to his faith and his desire to preserve Catholicism in England.

Unfortunately, Hodgson's activities did not go unnoticed by the authorities. He was arrested and accused of aiding and abetting Catholic priests. Subsequently, Hodgson faced a trial that ultimately led to his conviction.

On 10 December 1591, Sidney Hodgson met his untimely end at Tyburn, London, where he was executed by being hanged, drawn, and quartered. He remained steadfast in his faith until the very end, demonstrating great courage and resilience in the face of persecution.

Following his martyrdom, the Catholic Church recognized the sanctity of Sidney Hodgson. On 8 December 1929, Pope Pius XI issued a decree of martyrdom, officially acknowledging Hodgson's martyrdom. Later, on 15 December 1929, Pope Pius XI beatified him, declaring him blessed.

The feast day of Blessed Sidney Hodgson is celebrated on 10 December each year, commemorating the date of his martyrdom.
