Biography

Blessed Simón Miguel Rodríguez, also known as Simón Miguel, was a Franciscan lay brother who dedicated his life to serving others. He was born on November 23, 1912, in Villalcampo, Zamora, Spain, and was baptized at the church of San Lorenzo in Villalcampo just one day after his birth.

At a young age, Simón Miguel felt a calling to the religious life and joined the Franciscan Order. In his journey as a Friar Minor, he took the name Simón Miguel and made his solemn vows on June 26, 1935, in the convent of Fuenteobejuna. He diligently served the order in various capacities, one of which was as a cook in the convent where he resided.

Tragically, Simón Miguel's life was cut short during the Spanish Civil War, a time of great turmoil and persecution for Catholics. On the dawn of September 22, 1936, he was martyred in the cemetery of Azuaga, Badajoz, Spain. Despite the immense challenges and dangers he faced, Simón Miguel remained steadfast in his faith and his commitment to serving God and his fellow friars.

Blessed Simón Miguel Rodríguez is honored as one of the Martyred Friars Minor of Granada. His feast days are celebrated on September 22 and November 6. In recognition of his martyrdom and exemplary life, he was venerated by Pope Benedict XVI on April 28, 2006, through a decree of martyrdom. Furthermore, Pope Benedict XVI beatified him on October 28, 2007, acknowledging his heroic virtues and the sanctity with which he lived his life.

Blessed Simón Miguel Rodríguez's life serves as an inspiration to all, demonstrating the unwavering dedication to God and the Church, even in the face of great persecution. Through his selfless service and ultimate sacrifice, he exemplifies the values of humility, compassion, and faithfulness to God's calling.
