Biography
Blessed Tottone of Ottobeuren, also known as Toto, Totú, Totto, or Tuto, was born in the early 8th century to noble parents Silach and Ermenswinth. He belonged to a wealthy family that donated a manor to be used as a monastery, setting the stage for Tottone's future vocation.
Inspired by a deep sense of piety and a desire to serve God, Tottone embraced the monastic life and became a Benedictine monk. His unwavering dedication and spiritual leadership led him to found the renowned Ottobeuren Abbey in Ottobeuren, Germany, in 764. This abbey, known for its commitment to the Benedictine values of prayer, community, and work, still stands as a testament to Tottone's vision and commitment.
Under Tottone's guidance as the first abbot of Ottobeuren Abbey, the community flourished both spiritually and materially. The abbey became a center of learning, attracting scholars and students from far and wide. Tottone's strong leadership and guidance allowed the community to thrive and establish a reputation for its intellectual pursuits, as well as its commitment to the monastic way of life.
Blessed Tottone's feast day is celebrated on November 19th by the Benedictine order, honoring his contributions to the establishment and growth of Ottobeuren Abbey. He spent his entire adult life in the service of God and his community, striving for the spiritual growth and well-being of his fellow monks.
After a life filled with faithful service and devotion, Blessed Tottone peacefully passed away on November 19, 814, or possibly 815, at Ottobeuren Abbey. His mortal remains were originally enshrined under the altar of the church of Ottobeuren Abbey on June 30, 1163. However, due to religious conflicts over the years, the relics were dispersed to different locations to ensure their safety.
In 1772, the relics of Blessed Tottone were re-collected and enshrined in the chapel of San Nicola at Ottobeuren Abbey. This noble act allowed pilgrims and devotees to pay homage to the blessed monk, seeking his intercession and guidance in their spiritual journeys.
Although no specific representations of Blessed Tottone are mentioned, he is revered for his devotion, piety, and founding of Ottobeuren Abbey. His life and legacy continue to inspire and impact the religious community, serving as an exemplar of dedication and holiness. Though not officially beatified, his memory is cherished among the faithful who honor his contributions to the Benedictine tradition.
