Biography

Blessed Valeriano Rodríguez García was a Trappist priest who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on June 10, 1906, in Villaviciosa de San Miguel, León, Spain.

Valeriano was known for his strong devotion to God from a young age. His faith guided him to pursue a vocation as a Trappist monk, an order known for its commitment to solitude, silence, and prayer. Valeriano entered the Trappist monastery of Santa María de la Huerta in Soria, Spain, where he dedicated himself to a life of deep spiritual reflection and selfless service to God's people.

During the turbulent times of the Spanish Civil War, Valeriano faced great challenges and persecution as the conflict between the Republicans and Nationalists intensified. Despite the dangers, he remained steadfast in his commitment to his faith and his calling as a priest.

On December 3, 1936, Valeriano Rodríguez García was martyred in Santander, Cantabria, Spain, during the Spanish Civil War. He was executed for his unwavering loyalty to the Catholic Church and his refusal to renounce his beliefs. His courageous stand in the face of adversity became an inspiration for many, especially those suffering persecution for their faith.

Valeriano's sacrifice and dedication to his vocation did not go unnoticed. On January 22, 2015, Pope Francis recognized his martyrdom, and he was subsequently beatified on October 3, 2015.
