Blessed Vicente Nicasio Renuncio Toribio, also known as Father Vicente Nicasio, was a Catholic priest and member of the Redemptorists. He was born on 11 September 1876 in Villayuda, Burgos, Spain.
Blessed Vicente entered the Redemptorist Order and professed his vows on 8 September 1895. Recognized for his dedication and commitment, he was ordained a priest on 23 March 1901. Over the next 11 years, Father Vicente was assigned as pastor to several Redemptorist communities in Spain, where he served with great devotion and zeal.
In 1912, Father Vicente was assigned to the Shrine of Perpetual Help in Madrid, Spain, a significant place of worship and pilgrimage. He continued to serve there even during the turbulent years of the Spanish Civil War, which began in 1936. In the midst of this hostile climate, Father Vicente faced grave dangers as Marxist troops were ordered to kill priests on sight.
To protect himself from this threat, Father Vicente sought refuge in the homes of supportive families. However, on 17 September 1936, he was eventually discovered by the Marxist troops. He was captured, imprisoned in a series of their strongholds, and subjected to great suffering. Despite this, Father Vicente did not renounce his faith or his priestly duties.
On 7 November 1936, in Paracuellos de Jarama, Madrid, Spain, Father Vicente Nicasio Renuncio Toribio was martyred for his unwavering commitment to Christ and the Catholic Church. His courageous witness to the Gospel, even in the face of persecution, inspires countless believers to embrace their faith with fervor and constancy.
Blessed Vicente Nicasio Renuncio Toribio's martyrdom did not go unnoticed. His life of faith, exceptional service, and ultimate sacrifice were recognized by the Church. On 24 April 2021, Pope Francis approved the decree of martyrdom, officially recognizing Father Vicente's heroic virtues. This paved the way for his beatification, which took place on 22 October 2022 in the Cathedral of La Almudena, Madrid, Spain. The beatification ceremony was presided over by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, honoring the life and martyrdom of Blessed Vicente Nicasio Renuncio Toribio.
As a blessed and martyr of the Catholic Church, Blessed Vicente continues to be venerated and celebrated on his feast day, which falls on 7 November.
