Biography

Blessed Vitalis of Assisi, also known as Vitalis of Bastia, was born in 1295 in Bastia Umbra, Italy. He lived a wayward and sinful youth, indulging in worldly pleasures. However, his life took a dramatic turn when he experienced a profound conversion and dedicated himself to a life of penance and piety.

Seeking to atone for his past sins, Vitalis embarked on a pilgrimage to the most important shrines across Europe. This spiritual journey brought him closer to God and deepened his faith. After completing his pilgrimage, he felt called to a life of solitude and contemplation.

Vitalis then joined the Benedictine monastery of Monte Subasio, located in the region of Umbria, Italy. Within the walls of the monastery, he embraced the discipline and rigors of monastic life. He dedicated himself to prayer, fasting, and acts of self-denial, striving to live a life of holiness and devotion.

However, later in life, Vitalis felt a new calling to embrace an even more austere existence. He decided to leave the monastic community and become a barefoot hermit near his hometown of Assisi. In this solitary lifestyle, he renounced all material possessions, living a life of radical simplicity.

Vitalis was known for his deep piety and the miracles of healing attributed to him, particularly ones related to urinary tract ailments. Despite his ascetic lifestyle, he became a revered figure in the region, sought after by those in need of spiritual guidance and physical healing.
