Blessed William Saultemouche

Biography

Blessed William Saultemouche, also known as Guglielmo Saultemouche or Guillaume Saltemouche, was a co-adjutor Jesuit lay brother who dedicated his life to preaching against Protestantism and defending Catholic theology during a period of religious tension in France.

Born in 1555, little is known about William's early life and upbringing. However, it is clear that he was deeply committed to his faith and passionate about spreading the Catholic teaching. He joined the Society of Jesus as a lay brother, which allowed him to serve in various capacities without becoming an ordained priest.

William's most notable evangelistic efforts took place in Aubenas, located in the Cevennes region of France. During this time, Protestantism was gaining considerable influence in the area, and William felt compelled to confront the growing movement. He fearlessly preached against Protestant teachings and engaged in public theological debates with Calvinists, skillfully defending Catholic doctrine and challenging their beliefs.

However, his bold actions did not go unnoticed by the Huguenots, a group of French Protestants. In an act of retaliation, a band of Huguenot raiders captured William and another Jesuit lay brother named James Sales. The captors brought them before a self-appointed court, seeking to condemn them for their religious activities.

Undeterred and undaunted, William and Sales fearlessly argued their theological positions before the court, firmly defending the Catholic faith. However, in the eyes of many onlookers, the Huguenots appeared to have emerged victorious in the debates. Consequently, the court sentenced both William Saultemouche and James Sales to imprisonment and death.

On February 6, 1593, William Saultemouche met a martyrs' death, stabbed to death for his unwavering commitment to the Catholic faith. His courageous defense of Catholicism, even in the face of opposition and death, earned him the status of a martyr within the Catholic Church.

Recognizing his sacrifice, Pope Pius XI beatified Blessed William Saultemouche on June 6, 1926, acknowledging his exceptional spiritual journey and honoring his unwavering dedication to the Catholic faith.
