The Proto-Martyr of Florida

Fray Luis de Cáncer was born around 1500 in Barbastro, in the Kingdom of Aragon, Spain. He entered the Dominican Order as a young man and was ordained a priest. Assigned to the missions of the New World, he served in the Caribbean and Central America during the 1530s, where he witnessed firsthand the violence that accompanied colonial conquest.

Deeply influenced by Bartolomé de Las Casas, the great Dominican defender of indigenous peoples, Fr. Luis became a pioneer of non-violent evangelization. In Guatemala, he helped establish the “Land of True Peace” (Verapaz), a region where natives were converted through preaching and persuasion alone, without any military presence. This experiment proved that the Gospel could take root without the sword.

In 1549, Fr. Luis organized a mission to the Gulf Coast of Florida, determined to apply the same peaceful methods. He sailed from Havana with a small group of Dominican friars and made for Tampa Bay. The situation was dangerous from the start: previous Spanish expeditions had left the local natives deeply hostile to Europeans. Two of his companions were captured before he could even come ashore.

On June 26, 1549, Fr. Luis waded ashore unarmed and alone at Tampa Bay. He was killed by the natives almost immediately, struck down on the beach. He became the proto-martyr of Florida and is part of the larger Martyrs of La Florida cause, which includes approximately eighty-six individuals who gave their lives for the faith in the region. His cause was formally recognized in 2015 along with Antonio Inija and companions.

In His Own Words

I would rather die a thousand deaths than see a single Indian harmed in the name of Christ.
