Biografía

Blessed Anunciación Peña Rodríguez, also known as Sister Agustina, was a dedicated nun in the Servants of Mary, Ministers of the Sick. She was born on 23 March 1900 in Ruanales, Santander, Spain. From a young age, she showed great piety and a strong desire to serve God, which eventually led her to enter religious life.

Having joined the Servants of Mary, Sister Agustina committed herself to the care of the sick and the suffering. She wholeheartedly embraced the order's mission to bring comfort and healing to those in need, and her compassionate nature endeared her to all who encountered her. Sister Agustina's exemplary dedication to her vocation made her a beloved member of her community.

Unfortunately, during the turbulent times of the Spanish Civil War, countless Catholics became targets of persecution by anti-Catholic factions. Sister Agustina, along with many other religious men and women, faced immense danger as the war raged on. Despite the risks, she continued to faithfully serve her fellow Sisters and the sick, undeterred by the growing hostility towards the Church.

On 5 December 1936, Sister Agustina's life of service and virtue came to a violent end. She was martyred in Aravaca, Madrid, Spain, due to her unwavering faith and commitment to Christ. Her martyrdom serves as a testament to her unyielding devotion to God and her willingness to offer her life for her beliefs.

Recognizing her sacrifice and the sanctity of her life, Pope Francis proclaimed the martyrdom of Sister Agustina on 3 June 2013. This official recognition by the Church allowed for her beatification, which took place on 13 October 2013. The beatification ceremony was celebrated at the Complex Educatiu in Tarragona, Spain, with Cardinal Angelo Amato serving as the chief celebrant.

Blessed Anunciación Peña Rodríguez, or Sister Agustina, stands as an inspiration to all believers, embodying the virtues of selflessness, courage, and unwavering faith. Her life and martyrdom remind us of the sacrifices made by countless men and women of faith who have laid down their lives for the sake of the Gospel. Today, she is venerated as a blessed and intercessor for the faithful, an example of holiness in the face of adversity.
