Biografía

Blessed Eugenio Cernuda Febrero was an Augustinian priest who bravely faced martyrdom during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on November 15, 1900, in Zaratán, a small village in the province of Valladolid, Spain. Although not much is known about his early life, it is evident that his spiritual journey led him to the priesthood.

Blessed Eugenio joined the Augustinian Order, a religious community known for its commitment to prayer, study, and service to the Church. As a member of this order, he dedicated himself to a life of contemplation, seeking to deepen his relationship with God and to be of service to others. His dedication and faithfulness made him a beloved figure among his fellow religious and the community.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, a time of intense religious persecution, Blessed Eugenio faced great challenges. The war brought about a wave of anti-Catholic sentiment, resulting in the persecution and execution of numerous religious figures. Despite the danger, Blessed Eugenio refused to renounce his faith or abandon his religious duties.

On December 18, 1936, in the town of Sariego, located in the province of Santander, Spain, Blessed Eugenio Cernuda Febrero was martyred for his unwavering commitment to Christ and the Church. He remained steadfast in his faith until the very end, sacrificing his life rather than renouncing his beliefs.

Years later, on June 1, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI acknowledged the martyrdom of Blessed Eugenio, declaring him venerable and recognizing his heroic virtue. Finally, on October 28, 2007, the same Pope beatified him, bestowing upon him the title of "Blessed Eugenio Cernuda Febrero."

Blessed Eugenio's life and martyrdom serve as a powerful example of steadfastness, courage, and unwavering faith in the face of persecution. As a Catholic saint, he continues to inspire believers to remain true to their convictions, even in the most challenging circumstances. His feast day is celebrated on December 18th each year, commemorating the day he gave his life for his faith.
