Beato Eulogio Álvarez López

Blessed Eulogio Álvarez López was a Trappist monk and a martyr of the Spanish Civil War. He was born on July 28, 1916, in Quintana de Fuseros, León, Spain. Eulogio dedicated his life to the pursuit of spiritual enlightenment and joined the Trappist community in the monastery of San Isidro de Dueñas.

With an unwavering commitment to his faith, Eulogio Álvarez López embraced the monastic life and demonstrated exceptional devotion to prayer, contemplation, and self-sacrifice. Sadly, Eulogio Álvarez López's unwavering determination to stay true to his faith ultimately led to his martyrdom. On December 4, 1936, in Santander, Cantabria, Spain, he was viciously martyred, sacrificing his life for his religious beliefs and becoming a symbol of faith and courage in the face of oppression.

Years later, on January 22, 2015, Pope Francis recognized the martyrdom of Eulogio Álvarez López, venerated him, and decreed him as "Blessed". On October 3, 2015, Pope Francis officially beatified him, honoring his extraordinary devotion and sacrifice for his faith. The beatification recognition took place at the cathedral of Santander, Spain, with Cardinal Angelo Amato as the principal celebrant.
