Beato Francisco José Marín López de Arroyave

Blessed Francisco José Marín López De Arroyave, also known as Brother Francisco José, was born on 24 September 1910 in Vitoria, Spain. He was a member of the Salesians of Don Bosco, a religious congregation founded by Saint John Bosco.

Brother Francisco José joined the Salesians in Mohernando, Spain, and on 12 October 1933, he made his solemn profession as a coadjutor brother. He dedicated his life to serving God and others within the Salesian community.

Throughout his time as a Salesian brother, Brother Francisco José served at the Salesian college in Madrid, Spain. He was known for his unwavering faith, dedication to his duties, and his compassionate nature towards the students he cared for.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, religious persecution swept across Spain, leading to the capture and imprisonment of many clergy members, including Brother Francisco José. On 19 July 1936, he was seized and imprisoned for his religious beliefs. Despite facing immense pressure and adversity, he firmly refused to renounce his faith.

After enduring months of imprisonment, Brother Francisco José was ultimately executed on 9 November 1936 in Paracuellos de Jarama, Madrid, Spain. His unwavering faith and refusal to abandon his religious convictions made him a martyr for the Catholic faith.

Recognizing his martyrdom, Pope Benedict XVI declared Brother Francisco José Marín López De Arroyave venerable on 26 June 2006, issuing a decree that acknowledged his heroic virtue and sacrifice. On 28 October 2007, Pope Benedict XVI beatified him, acknowledging his path to sainthood and encouraging the faithful to seek his intercession and example.

Blessed Francisco José Marín López De Arroyave serves as an inspiration for all believers, reminding us of the courage and dedication it takes to remain faithful to one's convictions, even in the face of persecution and adversity. As a Salesian brother, he exemplified the values of his religious congregation and devoted his life to the service of God and others.
