Biografía

Blessed Ignasi Casanovas Perramón, also known as Ignasi of Saint Raymond, was born on 21 June 1893 in Igualada, Barcelona, Spain. He was the son of Raimondo Casanovas Brunet and Maria Perramón Oliveras. Ignasi was baptized when he was just one day old, formally entering the Catholic faith.

At the age of sixteen, Ignasi joined the Piarists, a religious order dedicated to education and the promotion of Christian values. He became a member of the Piarist community on 21 November 1909, and five years later, on 30 August 1914, he made his solemn vows, committing himself to a life of poverty, chastity, and obedience within the order.

Inspired by his deep faith and desire to serve God, Ignasi was ordained as a priest on 17 September 1916. He carried out his pastoral ministry in several Spanish cities, including Terrassa, Vilanueva, Olot, and Barcelona. Throughout his priesthood, Ignasi tirelessly served the spiritual needs of his community, particularly focusing on the education and welfare of children. He endeavored to instill in them the values of faith, knowledge, and love.

Sadly, Ignasi's life was cut short due to the turmoil and persecution during the Spanish Civil War. On 16 September 1936, he was martyred for his unwavering commitment to his faith. Ignasi was shot in a grove of trees near his mother's house in Odena, Barcelona, Spain. He was buried in the city cemetery of Odena before eventually being re-interred in the family tomb on 21 May 1948.

Recognizing Ignasi's martyrdom and his exemplary life of holiness, Pope John Paul II declared him venerable on 15 December 1994. This acknowledgment paved the way for his beatification, which took place on 1 October 1995, also by Pope John Paul II. As a blessed of the Catholic Church, Ignasi Casanovas Perramón serves as an inspiration and a model of faith for believers around the world.
