Beato Jacinto García Chicote

Blessed Jacinto García Chicote, also known as Brother Eustaquio, was a Trappist postulant who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 16 August 1891 in Támara de Campos, Palencia, Spain.

As a young man, Jacinto felt a strong calling to enter religious life and joined the Trappist monastery of San Isidro de Dueñas in Palencia. He embraced the monastic way of life, dedicating himself to prayer, contemplation, and hard work. Known for his simplicity, humility, and deep spirituality, Jacinto quickly became an exemplary member of the community.

In 1936, during the height of the Spanish Civil War, religious persecution was rampant, and many monasteries were targeted. The Trappist monastery where Jacinto resided was no exception. On 4 December 1936, Jacinto and twelve other fellow monks were arrested and imprisoned in Santander, Cantabria.

Despite the difficult conditions of imprisonment, Jacinto remained steadfast in his faith and continued to draw strength from his relationship with God. His unwavering commitment to his vocation as a Trappist was recognized even in the face of extreme adversity.

Tragically, on the very same day of his arrest, Jacinto was martyred for his faith. Alongside his fellow monks, he was executed, becoming a true witness to Christ's sacrifice. His martyrdom serves as a testament to his unyielding devotion and commitment to his religious calling, even in the face of persecution and death.

Jacinto García Chicote's heroic virtue and martyrdom were acknowledged by the Catholic Church. On 22 January 2015, Pope Francis issued a decree of martyrdom, officially recognizing Jacinto as a martyr. The beatification ceremony took place on 3 October 2015, with Cardinal Angelo Amato presiding over the celebration at the cathedral of Santander, Spain.
