Beato Juan Francisco Barahona Martín

Blessed Juan Francisco Barahona Martín, also known as Alejandro of Sobradillo, was a Franciscan Capuchin priest who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He is venerated as a martyr by the Catholic Church and has been beatified by Pope Francis.

Juan Francisco Barahona Martín was born on January 10, 1902, in Sobradillo, a small village in the province of Salamanca, Spain. From a young age, he displayed a deep devotion to the Catholic faith and felt a calling to the priesthood. Following his vocational path, he joined the Capuchin Order, known for its emphasis on simplicity, austerity, and service to others.

After completing his seminary studies and theological formation, Barahona Martín was ordained a priest. He dedicated himself wholeheartedly to his pastoral duties, serving the faithful with humility and compassion. On August 15, 1936, in Madrid, Spain, Father Barahona Martín was martyred for his unwavering commitment to his beliefs. Despite the threats and intimidations he faced, he remained steadfast in his faith, refusing to renounce his religious vocation or compromise his principles.
