Biografía

Blessed Marcos Ley√∫n Goñi, also known as Emiliano José, was a dedicated monk and member of the Marist Brothers of the Schools. Born on 7 October 1897 in Sansoáin, Navarra, Spain, he grew up in a devout Catholic family and from a young age demonstrated a strong devotion to his faith.

Choosing to serve God through the religious life, Marcos Ley√∫n Goñi joined the Marist Brothers, a congregation founded by Saint Marcellin Champagnat in 1817. The Marist Brothers were dedicated to providing education and guidance to young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

As a Marist Brother, Marcos Ley√∫n Goñi committed himself wholeheartedly to his vocation. He fervently embraced the teaching and values of the Congregation, dedicating his life to the education and spiritual formation of young students. He exemplified the Marist charism of simplicity, humility, and perseverance in his daily life.

Tragically, during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Brother Marcos Ley√∫n Goñi was martyred for his faith. On 11 August 1936, near Saganta, Huesca, Spain, he was violently persecuted and killed by those opposed to his religious beliefs. His courageous commitment to his Catholic faith, even in the face of such adversity, exemplified his unwavering devotion to God.

After his death, the memory of Brother Marcos Ley√∫n Goñi lived on among the faithful, and his sanctity was recognized by the Catholic Church. He was officially venerated on 3 June 2013 by Pope Francis, who issued a decree of martyrology acknowledging his martyrdom. Subsequently, on 13 October 2013, Pope Francis beatified him, bestowing upon him the title of "Blessed Marcos Ley√∫n Goñi."

Today, Blessed Marcos Ley√∫n Goñi serves as a powerful example of faith, dedication, and courage for Catholics around the world. His life and martyrdom remind us of the sacrifices made by countless individuals during times of persecution, and inspire us to remain steadfast in our own commitment to the Gospel.
