The Friar Who Ran Toward the Gunfire

Casimir Michael Cypher was born in 1941 in Medford, Wisconsin, a small lumber town in the north woods. He entered the Conventual Franciscan Friars Minor and made his religious profession, drawn by the Franciscan charism of poverty, simplicity, and service to the poorest.

In October 1973, Friar Casimir arrived in Honduras to serve the remote mountain villages of Olancho province. The region was desperately poor, and the campesinos (peasant farmers) were caught between powerful landowners and a military government. Friar Casimir threw himself into the work: teaching catechism, visiting the sick, and helping communities organize cooperatives to improve their lives.

On June 25, 1975, campesinos gathered for a peaceful demonstration in Juticalpa. Soldiers arrived and opened fire. Friar Casimir, hearing the shots, ran toward the violence to help the wounded. He was arrested on the spot. What followed was brutal: he was stripped, beaten, tortured, and executed by soldiers in the town square. He was thirty-four years old, less than two years into his Honduran mission.

The Los Horcones massacre, as it came to be known, claimed the lives of Friar Casimir, another priest, and several lay leaders. The event became a watershed moment for the Honduran Church and is remembered as one of the darkest episodes in the country’s modern history. In 2013, the Bishop of Olancho formally opened the cause for Friar Casimir’s beatification and canonization.
