Biografía

Jaime Hilario Barbal, born Manuel Barbal i Cosán on January 2, 1898, was a Spanish Catholic and professed Brother of the Christian Schools. He dedicated nearly two decades to teaching in the schools managed by his order before being caught up in the turmoil of the Spanish Civil War. On January 18, 1937, he was executed for his faith, a martyrdom that earned him recognition as a victim of odium fidei (in hatred of the faith). His beatification took place on April 29, 1990, and subsequent confirmation of a miracle attributed to his intercession led to his canonization by Pope John Paul II on November 21, 1999. Barbal is celebrated as a saint on July 28 each year.
