San Vigilio de Trento

Saint Vigilius of Trent, also known as Vigilio, was born around the year 353 in a Roman patrician family to parents Theodosius and Maxentia. He was the brother of two other saints, Saint Claudian and Saint Magorian. Saint Vigilius studied in Athens, Greece, where he gained a reputation for his exceptional intelligence and holiness. It was during his time in Athens that he became close friends with another renowned saint, Saint John Chrysostom. After completing his studies, Saint Vigilius settled in the region of Trent, Italy, in the year 380. The faithful of the area recognized his extraordinary qualities and chose him to be the bishop of Trent. As bishop, Vigilius dedicated himself to serving the poor and fighting against the evil practice of usury. His compassionate actions were known far and wide, and he earned the respect and admiration of many, including his dear friend Saint Ambrose of Milan. One of Saint Vigilius' notable achievements was his tireless effort to eliminate pagan practices and beliefs within his diocese. He played a significant role in nearly wiping out paganism in Trent, working diligently to bring the followers of Arianism back to the orthodox Christian faith. Additionally, Vigilius embarked on numerous missionary journeys to the surrounding areas, establishing a remarkable 30 parishes. During his missionary endeavors, Saint Vigilius collaborated with fellow saints, Saint Sisinnius, Saint Martyrius, and Saint Alexander, with whom he wrote a notable work titled "De Martyrio SS. Sisinnii, Martyrii et Alexandri." This collaboration showcased his scholarly disposition and commitment to spreading the Gospel. Saint Vigilius met his martyrdom on June 26, 405, near Lake Garda in the Val di Rendena. He was stoned to death after overturning a statue of Saturn in one of the remaining enclaves of pagan worship. His martyrdom and unwavering faith led to his recognition as the first martyr to be canonized by a pope, which Pope Benedict XIV acknowledged. Saint Vigilius of Trent is commonly depicted as a bishop holding a shoe, symbolizing his willingness to challenge and denounce pagan practices. He is widely venerated as the patron saint of various locations in Italy, including the diocese of Bolzano-Bressanone, Ovaro, Trent, and Tyrol. His tomb can be found in Trent, Italy, where he was buried following his martyrdom. Saint Vigilius' feast day is celebrated on June 26, honoring his life of sanctity, compassion, scholarship, and unwavering commitment to the Christian faith.
