Biography

Saint Abibus of Edessa, also known as Abibus the New and Habib the Deacon, lived during the early 4th century (c. AD 307–322). He was a Syrian Christian deacon and confessor who faced persecution under Roman Emperor Licinius. According to the Martyrdom of Habib the Deacon, Abibus was executed by immolation at Edessa in Syria. His story is venerated within the Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Oriental Orthodox Churches.

Abibus is remembered for his unwavering faith and dedication to Christ during a time of intense persecution. The Church honors him as a martyr, recognizing his sacrifice and commitment to Christian principles. His feast day is celebrated on September 2 each year.

The faithful seek his intercession for protection against persecution and courage in the face of adversity.
