Biography

Auguste Saint-Arroman was a French writer on varied subjects, best known for his work 'De L'action du café, du thé et du chocolat sur la santé, et de leur influence sur l'intelligence et le moral de l'homme,' published in 1845. This book, translated into English as 'Coffee, Tea and Chocolate: Their Influence upon the Health, the Intellect, and the Moral Nature of Man,' explored the effects of these substances on human health, intellect, and morality. Saint-Arroman suggested that chocolate was beneficial for the aged and weak but potentially dangerous for the young. He also authored an essay titled 'L’Anthanasie de Cabanis, ou la Médecine des incurables, à l'usage des médecins et du clergé,' published in 1857, which addressed the medical care of incurable patients. His response to the Fourierists was published as a reply to Dr. Arthur de Bonnard's brochure titled 'Organization d'une commune sociétaire d’après la théorie de Charles Fourier.' In 1848, Saint-Arroman briefly served as editor for a short-lived journal that honored the gardes mobiles, publishing only two issues in August of that year.

Saint-Arroman's contributions to cultural pharmacology and his engagement with social and medical topics during the tumultuous period of 1848 demonstrate his wide-ranging interests. His work continues to be recognized for its detailed exploration of the effects of common substances on human health and morality.
