Saint Benedict of Norcia

Benedict of Nursia, also known as Saint Benedict (3 March 480 – 21 March 547), was an Italian monk and the founder of the Order of Saint Benedict. He is revered in multiple Christian denominations including the Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox Church, Lutheran Churches, Anglican Communion, and Old Catholic Churches. Known as the 'Apostle of Italy,' he founded twelve communities for monks at Subiaco, Lazio, before moving to Monte Cassino where his Rule of Saint Benedict was established. This rule became one of the most influential in Western Christendom, shaping monastic life throughout Europe. In 1964, Pope Paul VI declared him a patron saint of Europe. His legacy endures through the Order of Saint Benedict and the Rule he authored, which continues to guide religious communities today.
