Saint Boniface

Saint Boniface, born Wynfreth around 675 and martyred on June 5, 754, was an English Benedictine monk who played a pivotal role in Christianizing Germanic lands during the eighth century. As a key figure of the Anglo-Saxon mission to Francia, he established significant ecclesiastical foundations and was appointed Archbishop of Mainz by Pope Gregory III. His death in Frisia alongside 52 others marked his martyrdom, and his remains were later transferred to Fulda, where they continue to be venerated as a site of pilgrimage. Boniface's life and work became widely known through various biographies, legal documents, sermons, and correspondence. He is celebrated as the 'Apostle to the Germans' and is recognized by Catholics in Germany and throughout the German diaspora for his missionary efforts and contributions to the unity of Europe.
