Saint Edward

Edward the Confessor, born around 1003 or 1005 and reigning as King of England from 1042 until his death on January 5, 1066, was the last monarch of the House of Wessex. He succeeded Harthacnut, son of Cnut the Great and Edward's half-brother. Known for his reputation as unworldly and pious, he restored the rule of the House of Wessex after a period of Danish rule. His reign saw infighting that began shortly after his death due to lack of heirs. About a century later, in 1161, Pope Alexander III canonized Edward as a saint, despite some historians portraying him as a successful and sometimes ruthless king whose image was tarnished by the Norman Conquest soon after his death.
