Ferdinand III, known as the Saint (el Santo), reigned as King of Castile from 1217 and King of León from 1230, with Galicia following in 1231. Born to Alfonso IX of León and Berengaria of Castile, Ferdinand was a key figure in the Reconquista, earning the title Athleta Christi ('Champion of Christ') for his military victories against Islamic rule in the Iberian Peninsula....
