Saint Gauzbert

Count Gauzbert of Maine, who lived from approximately 795 to 853, was a member of the Rorgonide family and son of Gauzlin I of Maine and Adeltrude. He took over as Count upon his brother Rorgon's death in 840, facing numerous challenges including Viking invasions and conflicts with other counts such as Lambert II of Nantes. In 852, he defeated Lambert in an ambush. According to some reports, Gauzbert was executed by Charles the Bald for alleged treason, while others claim he was killed by citizens of Nantes seeking revenge for Lambert's death. His legacy includes his role in defending Maine and his successor Rorgon II of Maine.
