Saint Liudger

Liudger, also known as Ludger, served as Bishop of Utrecht from around 848 to ca. 854. He was likely related to several other bishops of Utrecht during the ninth and tenth centuries, including his predecessor Alberik II. A certificate from 850 indicates that an uncle of Ludger named Baldric intended to found a chapter led by Ludger, which would benefit their family. However, Ludger's successor, Kraft, declined the bishopric due to fears about personal wealth attracting Viking raids. Ludger was interred in St. Salvator Church in Utrecht.
