Saint Lorenzo Giustiniani

Bernardo Giustiniani, born on January 6, 1408, and died on March 10, 1489, was a prominent Renaissance humanist and diplomat of the Republic of Venice. His career in diplomacy spanned over four decades, during which he served as an ambassador ten times, traveling abroad nine times. His first embassy took place in 1452 when he represented Venice at the coronation of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick III in Rome. He also conducted important missions to Naples and France, engaging with various rulers such as the kings of Naples and France, and popes Pius II and Sixtus IV. In addition to his diplomatic work, Giustiniani was involved in writing and translating, producing a history of Venice and several hagiographies. His oratorical skills were highly regarded by his contemporaries, and many of his speeches have been preserved.

Giustiniani's final embassies included visits to Ferrara (1473) and Milan (1485), as well as correspondence during the War of Ferrara (1482–1484). His efforts were centered on advocating for a crusade against the Ottoman Empire, which he discussed with key political figures. Giustiniani's contributions to Venetian diplomacy and culture earned him lasting recognition in his time.
