Saint Metrophanes

Hieromartyr Metrophanes, also known as Mitrophan or Metrophanes Chi Sung (December 10, 1855 – June 10, 1900), was the first Russian Orthodox priest of Chinese descent to be ordained and one of its early martyrs. Born in China during the Qing Dynasty, he dedicated his life to serving the Orthodox faith among his fellow countrymen. Metrophanes is remembered for his unwavering commitment to his vocation and his willingness to face persecution with courage. He was killed alongside his family members and church followers during the Boxer Rebellion in Beijing on June 10, 1900. Metrophanes is one of the 222 Chinese Martyrs glorified as saints by the Eastern Orthodox Church, including his wife Tatiana, sons Isaiah and John, and Isaiah's fiancée Maria, who were all killed with him.

Metrophanes’ life and death exemplify the faithfulness and sacrifice of early Christian missionaries in China. His martyrdom is a testament to the enduring power of the Orthodox faith in the face of persecution.
