Biography

Saint Prosper of Reggio, also known as San Prospero, was an Italian bishop who served from approximately 444 to 466 AD. Tradition holds that he governed the Diocese of Reggio Emilia for twenty-two years. While little is recorded about his life, documents confirm that he held this position in the fifth century. Known for his charity, Prosper is venerated as a saint and is celebrated on July 29th. He died at Reggio Emilia, where he had built and dedicated a church to Saint Apollinaris, now known as San Prospero. This church commemorates his episcopate but not his own dedication.
