Saint Rembert

Rembert Weakland, born on April 2, 1927, and died on August 22, 2022, was an American Catholic prelate who served as Archbishop of Milwaukee from 1977 to 2002. Prior to his archiepiscopate, he held the position of Abbot Primate of the Benedictine Confederation from 1967 to 1977. Known for his theological liberalism, Weakland was considered a champion of the Church's progressive wing during his tenure as Archbishop of Milwaukee. However, his reputation within the Church suffered due to a decade-long romantic relationship with a man that came to light in 2002. This revelation led to his resignation and tarnished his image. His response to the clergy sex abuse crisis was widely condemned by other Church leaders.
