Saint Vitaliano di Capua

Saint Vitaliano of Capua was a 7th-century bishop of Capua, Italy. According to tradition, he was born in Caudium, which corresponds to modern-day Montesarchio, located between Capua and Benevento on the Appian Way. He is recognized as the 25th bishop of Capua and also held the position of bishop of Benevento. A legendary life written at the end of the 12th century recounts that Vitaliano was involved in establishing a chapel on Monte Vergine, which later became an important site for the Williamites. The legend states that he was appointed bishop of Capua against his will and faced accusations from his enemies. After defending himself and proving his innocence, he left Capua but was captured and thrown into the Garigliano River in a leather bag. Miraculously saved by divine intervention, he made landfall at Ostia. The people of Capua later begged him to return, but Vitaliano refused and withdrew to Mount Partenio (Monte Vergine), where he built an oratory dedicated to the Virgin Mary. He died on September 3, 699 AD.
