Saint Aedhgein of Fobhar, also known simply as Aedhgein, was a prominent figure in the Catholic Church during the eighth century. Born in Ireland, the exact date of his birth is unknown. He dedicated his life to serving God, becoming a priest, a bishop, and a monk. Aedhgein's spiritual journey began when he entered Fobhar Abbey, located in present-day Westmeath. This monastery served as a center for learning and religious practice, and Aedhgein immersed himself in its teachings and disciplines. Due to his exceptional devotion and knowledge, he quickly rose through the ranks, eventually becoming the abbot of Fobhar Abbey. As the abbot, Aedhgein proved to be a skilled administrator and wise spiritual leader. He guided the community of monks under his care, fostering an atmosphere of piety, discipline, and intellectual pursuit.
