Saint Aigulf

Biography

Saint Aigulf was a Benedictine monk hailing from Fleury, France. Born around 630 in the city of Blois, Aigulf dedicated his life to the monastic vocation. He played a significant role in the retrieval of Saint Bernard's relics from the Lombards. Aigulf led a group of monks on a mission to recover the sacred relics of Saint Bernard. Their journey took them to Lombardy, where they successfully obtained the relics. This act demonstrated Aigulf's commitment to preserving the spiritual heritage of the Church and the veneration of saints. Later on, Aigulf became the abbot at the Lerins monastery in France around the year 670. When he arrived, he found the community in disarray and in desperate need of reform. With great determination and zeal, Aigulf embarked on the task of restoring discipline and order to the monastery. While many of the brothers supported Aigulf's efforts, some resisted his reforms. The opposition within the community eventually led to a riot. In response to the uprising, Aigulf, along with four of his supporters, was kidnapped and taken to the island of Capri in Italy. Tragically, Aigulf and his companions endured a horrifying fate at Capri. They were subjected to torture, blinded, and ultimately murdered. Although Aigulf was not a martyr in the traditional sense, his ordeal resulted from his unwavering defense of monastic life and his dedication to restoring the proper order within the Lerins monastery. Saint Aigulf's memory and example continue to be honored within the Catholic Church. While there is no specific representation associated with him, his dedication to monastic life and his fervent pursuit of reform serve as an inspiration to those seeking spiritual growth. Recognized as a saint by the Church before the formal establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, Aigulf is considered a pre-congregation saint. His feast day is celebrated on September 13th, commemorating his courageous service and sacrifice. Though not designated as a patron saint for any specific cause or occupation, Saint Aigulf's life stands as a testament to the strength of conviction and the willingness to defend the principles of monasticism, even at the cost of his own life.
