Saint Antony Mary Pucci, also known as Anthony Mary Pucci, Antonio Maria Pucci, Eustacchio Pucci, or Il Curatino, was born on 16 April 1818 in Poggiole di Vernio, Italy. He was the second child in a family of seven, born to a peasant family. Although his father served as the sacristan of the local church, he initially opposed Antony Mary's interest in religious life. At the age of 18, Eustacchio, as he was still known then, joined the Servite Order and took on the religious name of Antony Mary. He dedicated himself to the study of classics and theology, eventually being ordained as a priest in 1843. With a deep desire to serve God and His people, he embarked on a journey of pastoral care that would impact the lives of countless individuals. When Antony Mary was 28 years old, he was assigned as the parish priest in the seaside town of Viareggio, Italy. It was there that he would spend the rest of his life, selflessly devoting 45 years to the service of his flock. His dedication and compassion earned him the endearing title of il curatino, meaning "the little parish priest," given by his parishioners. One of Saint Antony Mary Pucci's notable traits was his special devotion to the sick, the aged, and the poor. This deep empathy led him to serve his community with distinction during two significant epidemics that struck the town of Viareggio. He tirelessly attended to the afflicted, providing comfort and spiritual guidance in their time of need. Additionally, Saint Antony Mary Pucci's compassionate heart extended towards children. He founded a nursing home by the seaside, focusing on providing care and support to vulnerable children. Throughout his tenure as parish priest, Antony Mary continually demonstrated his commitment to the well-being and upliftment of those under his care. His exemplary qualities and leadership within the Servite Order resulted in his appointment as Servite provincial from 1883 to 1890. During this time, he guided and inspired other Servite priests, fostering a spirit of holiness and service within the community. On 12 January 1892, Saint Antony Mary Pucci passed away in Viareggio, Italy. He was interred in the church of Sant'Andrea in Viareggio, which stands as a testament to his enduring legacy. Recognizing his extraordinary virtues, Pope Pius XII declared him venerable on 18 January 1948. Then, on 12 June 1952, Pope Pius XII beatified him, acknowledging his remarkable holiness and closeness to God. Finally, on 9 December 1962, Pope John XXIII canonized him as a saint, further affirming his status as a model of faith and virtue. Saint Antony Mary Pucci is revered as the patron saint of Vernio, Italy, his birthplace. His life serves as a source of inspiration for all those who seek to emulate his unwavering faith, selfless service, and compassion towards the marginalized and suffering.
