Biography

Saint Arbogast of Strasbourg, also known as Arascach, was a revered Catholic saint who lived in the 7th century. While there is little recorded information about his childhood, there are several legends surrounding his early life. Arbogast is said to have lived as a hermit in a cave located in Alsace, France. He was widely known for his holiness and piety, attracting followers and gaining a reputation for his sanctity. One of the most notable legends concerning Arbogast involves an incident where King Dagobert’s son was tragically killed in a hunting accident. Through his fervent prayers, Arbogast managed to bring the young boy back to life, solidifying his reputation as a miracle worker. Due to his devotion and remarkable spiritual gifts, Arbogast was appointed as the Bishop of Strasbourg around the year 630. In this role, he dedicated himself to serving the people of Strasbourg, offering spiritual guidance and support. With the support and generosity of King Dagobert, Arbogast oversaw the construction of several churches, demonstrating his commitment to flourishing religious life within the region. One of the most well-known representations of Saint Arbogast is depicted as walking over the surface of a river. Additionally, he is often depicted alongside Saint Sebastian, another revered saint of the Catholic Church. Saint Arbogast's feast day is celebrated on July 21st. While he was believed to have been born in Aquitaine, France, some writers have also claimed him for Scotland and/or Ireland. He died around the year 678, peacefully succumbing to natural causes. However, it is notable that at his insistence, Arbogast was buried in an area traditionally reserved for criminals. This perhaps serves as a testament to his humility and desire to be identified with the most marginalized members of society. Following his death, the church of Saint Michael was built over his grave, serving as a place of pilgrimage and veneration for many. The relics of Saint Arbogast were later transferred to the nearby Saint Arbogast abbey. Unfortunately, during the turmoil of the Thirty Years War, these relics were scattered and lost, depriving future generations of physical connections to this holy saint. Saint Arbogast of Strasbourg was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church, although this occurred prior to the establishment of the formal canonization process known today. He is recognized as the patron saint of Strasbourg, France, a testament to his deep relationship with and love for the people of that region. While Saint Arbogast of Strasbourg's life is shrouded in some legends and uncertainties, his unwavering devotion to God, the miracles attributed to him, and his tireless service to his people have earned him a place of honor among the saints of the Catholic Church.
