Biography

Saint Arcontius of Viviers, also known as Archon, Arconzio, or Arconce, was a notable figure in the Catholic Church as the Bishop of Viviers, France. Born in an unknown year, Saint Arcontius dedicated his life to serving the Church and defending its rights. Although little is known about his early life, it is believed that Saint Arcontius was ordained as a priest and eventually appointed as the Bishop of Viviers. During his time as bishop, he displayed great courage and unwavering fidelity to the Church's teachings. He vehemently fought for the rights of the Church in local matters, standing as a bastion of truth and justice. However, this unwavering devotion to his faith attracted the hostility of certain individuals who sought to undermine the influence and authority of the Church. In a tragic turn of events, a furious mob confronted Saint Arcontius and, driven by their anger and intolerance, martyred him for his steadfast defense of the Church's rights. The exact details surrounding his death remain unclear, but it is known that he was beheaded in the city of Viviers in 745. Saint Arcontius met a martyr's fate, meeting his death in defense of the Church he loved so deeply. Following his execution, his remains were interred in the church of San Vincenzo in Viviers, a place that held great significance for him and his ministry. However, the ravages of time and religious conflicts would later rob the faithful of the opportunity to venerate his relics, as they were burned by Calvinists in 1568. Though not officially recognized as a patron saint for any specific cause, Saint Arcontius' life and martyrdom serve as an inspiration to those who face opposition in their defense of the Church and its teachings. His feast days are commemorated on January 10th and 19th (in the diocese of Viviers, France), as well as on February 5th and September 5th on some calendars. Saint Arcontius of Viviers, through his steadfastness and sacrifice, remains an enduring example of courage and devotion to the Catholic Church, reminding us all of the importance of standing up for what is right, even in the face of hostility and adversity.
